CrashBangWallop was first developed way back in 1999 by Robert Grace.
Originally, CrashBangWallop was created for his niece, Rebecca. Rebecca wanted a program that she could safely use just like the 'grown-ups'.

Version one of CrashBangWallop consisted of little more than a smiley face which changed colours when keys were pressed.

Version two came along with the arrival of Robert's first nephew, Sean; the game was re-written, and sound effects were added for extra excitement.

Version three saw the addition of letter-based pictures - for example, if the user pressed the 'A' key, they were rewarded with a picture of an apple. Each picture was accompanied by its own sound effect.

Version four is the latest incarnation of CrashBangWallop!

This time around, there are two stages:

Stage I is aimed at the youngest users, and safely protects the computer to provide a fun and interactive environment for babies of any age. Babies are rewarded with fun and colourful animations when pressing any key on the keyboard. All windows and system keys are disabled, ensuring that babies stay within the application, and your files are safe!*

Stage II kicks it up a level - each key press rewards the user with an image corresponding to the letter pressed. The letter is spoken aloud, and spelled out across the bottom of the screen. Users who can control a mouse can move over the letters to hear them. Clicking the image rewards the user with the full word being spoken aloud.

Voiceover work for Stage II is provided by the very talented Beth Magill:

"A popular session musician, she has recorded several albums with singer/songwriter, Johnsmith, hammered dulcimists Jerry Read Smith and Jim Taylor and more. With a passionate, exuberant style, Beth was also a founding member of Asheville's groundbreaking Celtic band, Mooncoin. She served as the music director for Highland Repertory Theater's production, A Mislaid Heaven, and she currently plays with The Magills, the contra dance band, Fly By Night, and various other musicians. She also enjoys a thriving Kindermusik studio, teaching music and movement to children ages newborn to five."

*CrashBangWallop is NOT intended to be used as an 'electronic babysitter'! Ensure that users are supervised at all times. Key combinations such as CTRL-ESC, ALT-ESC are disabled, as are the Windows and context menu keys. CTRL-ALT-DEL can be used to close the application if the need arises.
